Dipolarization fronts and magnetic flux transport

چکیده
Recent emphasis on dipolarization fronts (DFs) has led to the impression that DFs play a significant role in bringing magnetic flux to the inner magnetosphere during substorms. In this work, we investigate the amount of magnetic flux transport associated with DFs by examining the frozen-in field line condition (FIC) for previously reported DF events. A study of 18 DF cases shows that the FIC does not hold for 17 cases when the ratio of

A comparative study of dipolarization fronts at MMS and Cluster
We present a statistical study of dipolarization fronts (DFs), using magnetic field data from MMS and Cluster, at radial distances below 12 RE and 20 RE , respectively. Assuming that the DFs have a semicircular cross section and are propelled by the magnetic tension force, we used multispacecraft observations to determine the DF velocities. About three quarters of the DFs propagate earthward an...
متن کاملFrozen-in condition for ions and electrons: implication on magnetic flux transport by dipolarizing flux bundles
The ability of dipolarizing flux bundles (DFBs) in transporting magnetic flux from the mid-tail reconnection site for near-Earth dipolarization is evaluated by two methods: the generalized Ohm’s law and the concept of flux preserving and line preserving. From the generalized Ohm’s law, the breakdown of the frozen-in condition (FIC) for ions is shown to be intimately related to that for electron...
متن کاملSuprathermal electron acceleration during reconnection onset in the magnetotail
We study one event of reconnection onset associated to a small substorm on 27 September 2006 by using Cluster observations at inter-spacecraft separation of about 10 000 km. We focus on the acceleration of suprathermal electrons during different stages of reconnection. We show that several distinct stages of acceleration occur: (1) moderate acceleration during reconnection of pre-existing plasm...

[1] Transport and acceleration of ions in the magnetotail largely occurs in the form of discrete impulsive events associated with a steep increase of the tail magnetic field normal to the neutral plane (Bz ), which are referred to as dipolarization fronts. The goal of this paper is to investigate how protons initially located upstream of earthward moving fronts are accelerated at their encounte...
متن کاملGeosynchronous magnetic field response to solar wind dynamic pressure pulse
[1] We present a study of the response of the geosynchronous magnetic field to abrupt enhancements of the solar wind dynamic pressure. Results are obtained separately for cases of northward and southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) prior to and after the solar wind pressure jump. For pressure enhancements with southward IMF we find that the response of the geosynchronous magnetic field ...
